2018 Ski Trip

Following our awesome 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016 ski trips we are starting to plan our 2018 ski trip. Our previous trips have been described by those that went on them as the best trips they have ever been on – including the famous Arden Year 10 ski trip!!!

This time, we will be going to Madonna Di Campiglio in the Dolomites range of North Eastern Italy. This is an area of linked ski resorts and villages allowing us extensive opportunities to explore.

2016 Ski Trip

This is a trip available to ALL members regardless of experience from any age group: from beginner all the way to expert, from year 6 to year 13 (in 2017 -2018 school year).  We have had many year 7 members with us in the past – this is equally applicable to ALL members.

In a change from previous years, we are going to be travelling with Voyager Ski, a company with many years of experience arranging trips of this type.  They are an excellent company and take care of everything allowing us to enjoy the holiday and not worry about arrangements.

Fund Raising

We are keen to make the trip as accessible as we can to all members who wish to go. To enable us to do that we are arranging a program of fundraising to reduce the cost for each participant as much as possible. Each participant who wishes to take part in the trip will be asked to take part in the fundraising program although this is optional – all details below.

If you are at all interested in taking part please read on:

Destination & Accommodation

We will be staying in Madonna Di Campiglio at the Hotel Cristallo.  It is a fabulous 4* hotel run for many years by the Maffei family.  It is situated in the Viale Dolomiti, with views over a small lake and surrounded by the stunning scenery of the Brenta Dolomites. The Cristallo’s rooms are furnished in a classical mountain style and are equipped with all the basic amenities.  The 77 rooms can accommodate between 4 – 5 persons, are all ensuite and have TV, radio and telephone – and most importantly for snapchat, free WIFI!

Meals are served buffet style in the restaurant and breakfast – which the hotel is renowned for – and include both sweet and savoury dishes.  Hot lunches are available in the hotel but packed lunches can be taken out onto the mountain to enable a full day’s skiing.  Dinner includes local Trentino delicacies prepared lovingly by the chef.  There is a Gala night once a week.

There is a ski storage room in the basement of the hotel and it’s only a few minutes’ walk to the ski lifts which transport you to the 150km of outstanding, snowy pistes.

You can see more about the hotel at http://www.hotelcristallo.info.

Madonna Di Campiglio is part of a linked area of resorts which includes Folgarida, Marilleva, Madonna and Pinzolo. Between them, they have 150km of runs, served by 59 lifts that have an astonishing lift capacity of 31k skiers per hour – no waiting!!! Plus there is an extensive network of snow cannons meaning that 95% of the ski area can be covered in the event of a lack of snow.

Madonna Di Campiglio, the town, is located in the Dolomites of Northern Italy.  Nestling in a valley, the town boasts some of the best intermediate level skiing in Italy.  Madonna has one of Italy’s best lift systems which is connected to that of Folgarida and Marilleva.  This gives access to a wide range of skiing from 7km of blues for beginners to the Canalone Miramonti or 3-Tre, which is where the annual world cup race is held, for the more proficient of us.

Apres Ski Program

There are some activities to do in the hotel which are organised by Voyager but optional / additional après ski activities such as bowling, ice skating, swimming etc. outside of our accommodation must be allowed for if required and as a guide allowing about £8 – £10 per evening will cover the cost of most activities.

Madonna has a banging nightlife for those that are old enough with plenty of cafes, restaurants and shops to keep everyone happy – all within walking distance of the hotel.

Costs

The trip cost is £949 for a fully inclusive trip. There isn’t any need for any extra money aside from a little spending money for hot chocolates, souvenirs / gifts and some food on the coach trips there and back. All food whilst at the hotel is included.

The schedule of payments is as follows:

  • £100 – deposit on booking
  • £100 – 22nd March 2017
  • £749 – 30th November 2017

All payments must be made electronically to Challenge Adventure Group at the following details:

  • Sort Code: 40-26-22
  • Account Number: 41271806

If participants are likely to have difficulty meeting payment deadlines we have in the past been able to provide alternative payment arrangements to make it easier for members to participate. If you would like to be considered for this please contact us IN ADVANCE OF ANY PAYMENT DEADLINE.

Funding

To reduce the cost, demonstrate the value of money and working as a team towards a target we run a program where participants take part in fundraising to assist in the cost of their own trips. Our aim is to help members raise the funds they need towards the cost of their trip. This will primarily be through car washing, but may be through other methods that parents and leaders can suggest and support.

The program will work as follows:

  1. An event will be managed / set up by a parent of a participant or a leader.
  2. Participants, if able, will take part the event and will then receive a proportionate amount of the proceeds from the event based on attendance.
  3. Each participant has a CAG account which we will manage with a running total of the funds available to them towards their trip.
  4. At payment deadlines the full amount must be paid by a combination of either money from fund raising and / or payment by parents.
  5. The payment schedule requires all costs to be paid to the travel company by the beginning of December 2017. However, any events after this point will be considered a surplus to be repaid in lieu of the “loan” made to parents by CAG (where applicable) for the completion of the payment schedule.
  6. Any shortfalls in funds at payment deadlines must be met by participants own payments.

This is an ambitious program and target and we will require participants and parents to be on board with commitment towards the overall goal. We understand that not all participants will be available at all the events, hence the ‘account’ management, but hope that everyone is on board in spirit if not present at particular events.

Alternatively, if you don’t wish to take part in the program and are willing to pay the full cost instead that will be fine, but we would rather have all participants involved to create a great team experience if possible.

We want everyone who wants to take part in this trip have the opportunity to do so, regardless of ability to pay out of own funding. If you have other concerns about funding the trip feel free to discuss these with us in strict confidence – we’ll do our best to help.

Trip Cancellation & Booking Conditions

Whilst we don’t envisage that participants will have to cancel their participation we need to point out the conditions we have to abide by from the tour operators:

  • Up until 12 weeks before departure: Loss of deposit
  • Between 4 to 12 weeks before departure: Loss of 60% of invoiced price.
  • Less than 4 weeks before departure: Loss of 80% of invoiced price.
  • Two weeks or less before departure: Loss of 100% of invoiced price.
  • Please note: If the reason for your cancellation is covered under the terms of your insurance policy, you may be able to reclaim these charges from the insurer.

All the trip booking conditions are available to view online at:

Kit

The end of winter is the best time to consider purchasing ski clothing if needed – not the end of summer! Good deals on end of season kit are available at various retailers or online at the right time.  Aldi also have some great value ski kit – it’s usually available from mid-November – https://www.aldi.co.uk/specialbuys/about-our-specialbuys/skiing. If you know of anyone who has been skiing but won’t be going during that period (there will be hundreds in the Solihull area) consider borrowing or renting their gear.

Next Steps

We need to get your booking form and deposit. The booking form is available at the end of this attached letter. All payments and forms need to be with us by Friday Jan 13th 2017.

If you can’t make this date but would like to be considered for participation PLEASE LET US KNOW.

If you have ideas or areas where you can manage or assist running a funding event please let us know – we need all the help we can get to reach our total and have a great trip. Parents are invited to assist and lead events to ease the pressure on leaders – we appreciate your help!
